With Me

Artist Statement

Stories have always followed me. As a child, I often created narratives for each place I was. My neighborhood and local parks shaped my world then and now. I could be in my backyard picking wild onion flowers, but I saw myself in an epic fantasy novel as a florist gathering materials for a bouquet. Any garden or landscape I viewed was instantly a template for something new. Every place was an opportunity for adventure and creation. Where was it set? What could happen there? How would people interact in that circumstance? How could I fit into their stories? These were all things considered. Despite being an only child and often playing alone, I always thought of other girls being alongside me for these journeys. With them, a place was created where young women were powerful and worked alongside each other towards their goals.

Daydreaming allowed me to explore friendship, connections between people, and space as if there were no obstacles or fences. My work explores the distance between imagined figures and landscapes and vice versa. Creating sculpture allows me to bring these figures to reality and explore how stories can connect people while I use painting to explore the spaces that inspire me. Today, I carry these journeys and dreams within me. This art allows me to look back at that little girl who was always searching for more to continue her adventures.
